Press Advisory
Press Conference Notice
Date & Time:
10:30~12:00 Tuesday, December 23, 2025
Venue:
National Taiwan University Alumni Hall 3F, Conference Room B , No. 2-1, Sec. 1, Jinan Road, Taipei City, Taiwan
Background
Zola was originally scheduled to report to the Hualien District Prosecutors Office on the morning of December 23, 2025, to begin serving a prison sentence.
Zola maintains that the criminal charges filed by Yu-Hsin Chen, alleging the “illegal disclosure of personal data,” are factually and legally unfounded. Zola further asserts that the case was adjudicated through non-public proceedings and finalized after three levels of trial, resulting in imprisonment. According to Zola, this represents a serious miscarriage of justice, comparable to “accusing a blind person of secretly reading state secrets,” as the complainant’s name, photographs, and claimed victim identity had already been publicly disclosed by the complainant herself.
At this press conference, Zola will present his legal position and disclose materials and evidence as he claims, and will explain his concerns regarding the implications of this case for judicial integrity, freedom of expression, and press freedom in Taiwan.
Key Topics
-
Case Overview and Legal Arguments
Zola will outline why he believes the charge of “personal data disclosure” lacks factual and legal basis, and will address concerns regarding judicial procedures and the final verdict. -
Clarification of Related Allegations
Zola will explain the circumstances surrounding Yu-Hsin Chen’s demand for an apology from human rights lawyer Teng Biao, and the subsequent escalation of allegations to “attempted sexual assault,” from Zola’s perspective. -
Alleged Transnational Repression
Zola will present what he describes as evidence concerning Yu-Hsin Chen’s alleged involvement in transnational repression targeting several Chinese-born dissidents, and will call on relevant authorities to investigate in accordance with the law.
Invitation
Zola further states that this ruling has caused serious harm to Taiwan’s international reputation for press freedom, and has created a chilling effect on journalists’ ability to lawfully report on matters of public interest.
Zola respectfully invites the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau, the Mainland Affairs Council, and media organizations from Taiwan and around the world to attend.
He calls for a fact-based and law-based examination of this case and its implications for Taiwan’s judicial credibility, freedom of expression, press freedom, democracy, and civil liberties.
Media attendance is respectfully requested.
Sincerely,
Zola
